Designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2003 the Thousand Islands - Frontenac Arch is a 150,000 hectare reserve covering much of Leeds County and some of Frontenac County. The reserve harbours a variety of wildlife and forms a land bridge connecting the Algonquin Park to the Adirondack region. Within its boundaries a breadth of local communities and individuals have committed to work towards a sustainable feature.

Composed of 20 islands the St. Lawrence Islands National Park is Canada's smallest national park. Due to the moderating effects of the Great Lakes the local climate is mild and plants and animals usually only found further south live on the islands.
